Why Reality TV..?

Reality TV sets itself apart from soap operas and other TV shows for many reasons, it's real and for the most part unscripted. When you come to think about it there are so many new shows that have hit the air from as early as Cops to the latest Jersey Shore and everything in between. This large category has shot out several series of shows that cater to all types of demographics. Some of the top rated realities include:
The Biggest Loser
Survivor
The Real World
Dancing with the Stars
American Idol
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
The Amazing Race
The Hills
Jersey Shore
Project Runway
Since its spike in production around the early 2000's, reality TV shows have been in demand from both a viewers and producers perspective. Makers of realities see it as advantageous because they are relatively cheap to produce, they require few if any celebrities and a vast majority of people will watch them. This also spikes a huge interest for marketers who participate in commercial advertising, as they may focus a good portion of their budget for a spot around these show times. Why we love it?
As viewers of reality TV shows, the millions of us stay committed to our weekly show time spots because they are filled with violence, nudity and vulgarity. It’s a time when we can see average Joe’s push their limits to reach goals that us viewers have in common with or admire and strive for. It is our guilty pleasure to stay devoted to some of these shows, for those like The Real World and Jersey Shore, watching them and the events that cast members go through can sometimes make us feel normal as we enjoy viewing their mishaps and embarrassments.
New seasons of realities are up and coming all the time, they provide us with conversation, entertainment, laughter and cries. At best we should embrace them, grab some snacks, friends and be entertained.

  1. Not a fan of reality tv since Survivor Second Season as I find core concepts are being merely repeated and revamped into different ideas but would give the genre a second chance after reading this. good job

  3. Reality TV helps people like me think twice about how good i have have it right now and not take things for granted. Like theres so much drama on reality tv which is entertainment but at the same time very unnecessary. Everytime you see confrontation on one of these shows u think to urself "here we go" but for the person who wrote this blog genius just genius.
